Saturday Pickup - May 30th

A quick note about possible numbers on Saturday. It appears that DiscNW has scheduled Spring League playoffs to occur this Saturday and Sunday. The folks on Rainmakers have a game up in Seattle on Saturday for this reason, so attendance might be sparse. If you plan on attending, leave your mark in the comments, or at the bottom of this post (using the Definitely, Definitely Not, Maybe buttons).

Memorial Day Pickup

Hey folks! If one were to live in a bunker in some country whose name ends with a -stan, you might not realize that this upcoming Monday is the Memorial Day holiday. No work + good weather = one hell of a nice day to try and get a game together. As we tend to do around these parts, we're throwing together an impromptu pickup game on the holiday with some post game BBQ action. Details as such:

Time: 2pm
Location:
Jefferson Elementary School
4302 N. 13th Street
Tacoma, WA

Bring a light and a dark, and any other bits and pieces that you think you might need. You can use the comments or the Definitely, Definitely Not, Definitely Maybe links at the bottom if you'd like to let folks know you're coming. Or maybe you're a ninja, and like the element of surprise on your side. Sneaksome...

Also, in terms of general pickup news, Saturdays roaming field experiment comes to a close. Apparently not a good move. So we're switching back to a fixed location. And to make things easier, that fixed location will be the same place as Tuesday and Thursday pickup. Times and location are on the side bar.

And you can also follow the TacomaUlti twitter feed for news and such.

Saturday Pickup Update

An update! For Saturday pickup we have a roving field schedule. To help with the communication process, I've also set up a Twitter account to send an update once we settle on a field. If you're interested in getting the update, start following tacomaulti. I'll send a tweet with the field name when I find the first open field.

As a note for this upcoming Saturday (5/2), the Rainmakers folks do have a four game Sunday, so a number of those folks might not be present. This would be one of those weeks where it would be useful to use the Definitely, Definitely Not, and Maybe links to let folks know if you'll be there.

Pickup Schedule

Tuesdays, Thursdays

Pickup on Tuesdays and Thursdays is currently at Jefferson Elementary (4302 N. 13th). People start showing up around 4:45pm to throw, and games start around 5:30pm.

Saturdays

Pickup on Saturdays is a bit trickier. In pursuit of better fields, we're going to start a bit of roving. We have a handful of fields that we'd like to play on. The goal is to avoid the ankle-breaking extravaganza that is the Professional Development Center field, while retaining enough space for two games if we get enough folks out. We'll still use PDC if the other fields are occupied, but there are three other locations that we'll check first. The order to check would be:

1) Mason Middle School Turf Field (3901 N 28th St)

2) Wilson High School Fields (1202 N Orchard St)

3) Truman Middle School Football Field (5801 N 35th St)

4) Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault)

If you have questions or comments about the rotation, feel free to post.

A Slight Change

With the weather turning towards the better half of the spectrum, the ever wise Jerry thought it would be good to make a change in the format of posts for the spring/summer. From now until some time in the future, we're going to assume that we'll have enough folks out to play every week. As such, we won't ask you to respond as you whether or not you'll make it (because that was more a means of letting folks know that things might be scarce during the winter).

Instead, I'll throw a post up today with the details of the pickup games (and also make sure the sidebar is up to date), and will only post throughout the summer if there's some sort of event during a particular weekend that might pull a number of folks away (typically this would correspond to tournaments). When I do make one of those posts, that's when you can all jump in and comment if you're interested in seeing whether there will be enough folks still around to make the trip out to the field worthwhile.

Saturday Pickup - 4/11/09

Here comes another one. As we move towards the weekend, a few things for you to ponder.

1) This is the last week of Tacoma Indoor league.
2) Thursday pickup resumes next week.
3) The weather, while fickle, is not keeping people away from the field.

With Thursday pickup in particular, I'll be adding one additional post per week for responses. Posting schedule will be Saturday night/Tuesday night/Thursday night. The post for the next game will go up, giving 2-3 days to respond with your status. So. Onwards to details:

Saturday Pickup - 4/4/09

Another upcoming Saturday game! Prior to pickup, some of the male folk from Tacoma will be scrimmaging the talented UPS Thunderhorse crew. If you're interested in watching, feel free to show up a bit early (start time is slated for 2pm currently - which is likely to push out the start time for actual pickup). We'll be trying to poach the turf field at Mason Middle School (N. 28th and Proctor) for the scrimmage, so show up there if interested. If the field is in use, we'll move over to the usual stomping grounds at the Professional Development Center. If we do get the turf field, pickup will be there instead of the PDC.

So in summation:

Location: Mason Middle School (N. 28th + Proctor)
Time: 3:30pm(ish)

Backup Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

***UPDATE***
From the glorious Jerry, who scours (with rigour) the surrounding area for fields, regarding location-y stuff....

Fields: This is the tricky bit, since:
a) We want decent fields
b) We have no reservations
c) Apparently other people use decent fields and make reservations and such

So, here is the priority of where you should start showing up:

1) Mason Turf field (28th and Proctorish)
2) Wilson HS (1202 North Orchard) has a football and 1.5 soccer fields we can hope to get.
3) Truman (where we play indoor). Decent full field, very few ankle breakers, plenty of dog poop. N. 37th and Pearl.
4) PDC (the usual Saturday pickup place 2301 North Vassault)

Tuesday Pickup - 3/31/09

For those unaware (or indifferent), March is a month with 31 days. This month that 31st day happens to coincide with a Tuesday. And in an odd twist to this plot, Tuesdays just happen to be a day when ultimate is played in the pickup fashion at a location to be disclosed in a shocking conclusion later on. So, make with the discs and head to the field on Tuesday. No pressure, but I hear if you don't, then the groundhogs of the world will collectively hit the snooze button and make winter last even longer. Damnable weather manipulating rats. Onwards to your familiar friends, the details:

Location: Jefferson Elementary(4302 N. 13th).
Time: 4:45pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Saturday Pickup - 3/28/09

Hey folks! You know the drill. Pickup this Saturday at the usual place and time. Heading through the spring, the weather tends to be a bit fickle, but there's always at least a handful of folks that show up.

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Satuday Pickup - 3/21/09

Pardon the interruption, while I try and get used to a posting schedule that puts me here more frequently. Saturday pickup details are below. The PLU BBQ is running this weekend (a college tournament that the fine folks over at PLU run), which may impact numbers. As such, make sure you do update your status. New post Saturday night for the Tuesday edition of Tacoma pickup.

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Tuesday Pickup - 3/17/2009

Speaking of the devil, it appears that the grandmaster of hobbling about has deemed the sunlight plentiful enough for Tuesday pickup to begin. So, on (extremely) short notice, things will get underway tomorrow at Jefferson Elementary school. So, to make things brief, details:

Location: Jefferson Elementary(4302 N. 13th - N.11th is the cross street adjacent to the field).
Time: 4:45pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Saturday Pickup - 3/14/09

Ack! I appear to have missed a post! Apologies and such! Sleep deprivation may have played a small role in that oversight, but regardless, on with the regularly scheduled ballyhoo. Pickup is indeed on. Details to follow.

As a bit of a heads up, Daylight Savings has sprung! Which means that weekday pickup is just around the corner. Unsure that the sun is quite ready for our afternoon shenanigans, but as the slice of sun-dappled afternoon stretches to an appropriate length, we will be resuming Tuesdays and Thursdays. Indoor lasts until April 2nd, so if it seems that we have enough daylight at some point in March, we may start with Tuesdays/Saturdays and then resume the full Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday load post April 2nd. When that starts, this site should be updated with a post for each game (to get expected counts for each day, and pass on information regarding location).

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Saturday Pickup - 2/28/09

In this non-leap year, ultimate can cap off your February! Numbers once again hit 14+ this past week, so fear not low attendance. And for the sake of brevity, that's all I'll say in the non-standard vein of things. On to the details:

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Saturday Pickup - 2/21/09

Hey, hey, hey! Another week of pickup. The standard bit is below. In addition to this post, check back later in the week for a poll regarding what time pickup should start (there's been some talk of shifting times about).

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Saturday Pickup - 2/14/09

Late, late, late! Apparently I have been pressed for time or something to that effect. Regardless of how time chooses to parlay with me, a post is here for your viewing (and responding) pleasure. Pickup continued to run strong this past week. Total number of folks ran to about 17ish? Definitely had 7s with a few subs. So for those worried about low numbers, worry not. Just make your mark in the Definitely column and proceed to the field on Saturday. And without further ado, details:

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Saturday Pickup - 2/7/09

Another week descends! Once more, here are the details concerning Saturday Pickup. Numbers have been solid for the past few weeks, and there's nothing that I'm aware of that should prevent them from continuing to be so. And so, without further ado...

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Saturday Pickup - 1/31/09

Again with the disc! As we hit the end of the month, a couple things worth mentioning. First, apparently folks are starting to use the site a bit more consistently! Which means that the projected numbers seem to be a bit more in line with what we're seeing at the field. So check in towards the end of the week (or Saturday morning) if you're on the fence to see if you can be swayed by the masses. Which leads to number two. If you mark yourself as a maybe and you can move yourself to a definite (in either direction) as the week marches on, feel free to do so! Your earlier response gets removed and the new response gets recorded, which makes the numbers a bit more certain. I tend to think of the Maybes as people that are coming, but others may not be so optimistic. So that said, details:

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Saturday Pickup - 1/24/09

Once again, back to your regularly scheduled disc type happenings. Keep an eye posted to the comments in case a crowd decides to head up north again for disc on the south side of Seattle. The field was spectacular and there were enough folks to field two games (with a solid contingent of Tacoma folk). The winter pickup in Georgetown runs for a few more weeks, so if numbers look sparse and you need to play, it's a solid option.

The standard details for your viewing pleasure:

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.

MLK Day Pickup

With the extended holiday weekend, folks round these parts thought it would be peachy to throw together a game on this upcoming Monday (Martin Luther King Jr Day). So let's make with the brother/sisterhood and get to a field:

Time: 1pm til people can't stand the sight of a disc in their hand.

Location: Here's the tricky bit. As usual with these holiday pickup days, we like to try and get special locations in and around the Tacoma area. The Tacoma Dome evidently is unavailable, so we're looking at hosting at the fine Mason Middle School turf field. Cross streets are N. 27th and Mason/Proctor. If perchance the turf field is occupied, we'll move the show over to the Professional Development Center field.

Bring a white, a dark, and whatever other accouterments to a fine days ultimate that you can think of. As per previous posts, use the options at the bottom (Definitely, Definitely Not, Maybe) to specify your status, which should help us get a feel for how many folks will be out (especially given the short notice).

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Saturday Pickup - 1/17/09

Hey folks! A (slight) curve ball this week. While not limping about the field, Jerry Keister patrols the DiscNW bulletin boards in shark-like fashion. And he happened upon this little bit of fluff and dander:

http://www.discnw.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1761

and thought it would be an interesting opportunity to vary our winter schedule. So, the thought is to take a field trip (caravan style) up north to play on the lush turf fields in Georgetown (South Seattle) and show those Seattle folks what ultimate really looks like. Fields are scheduled from 1pm-5pm.

For this particular occasion, if you're interested in heading up, in addition to the standard Definitely, Definitely Not, Maybe blather, post a comment and we can work out carpool arrangements, etc...

And because any ultimate road trip almost begs for post game beverages, how bout a post game stop to top off the day? Nine Pound Hammer is about two minutes from the fields and sounds great (I have to admit that the allure for me is Georgetown Brewing's 9 Lb Porter, although if folks have a preference for elsewhere, I can satisfy that particular curiosity by a quick stop for a growler to go at Georgetown Brewing itself...)

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Saturday Pickup - 1/10/09

Hey folks! Back to the regular schedule! No tournaments or such this weekend, so numbers should be better then last week. So on to details:

Location: Professional Development Center (2301 N Vassault).
Time: 2:30pm

Use the Definitely, Definitely Not, or Maybe options at the bottom of the post to indicate your status. If you've got additional information, you can post a comment to make your mark on the weekend.
